91 year old Milonguero

My 3rd Buenos Aires Tango adventure, Wednesday, May 11, 2011 day 93

I had been hoping to interview 91 year old Milonguero Roberto Segarra for my video project, but hadn't seen him at any of the milongas, until one Monday night I saw him at La Nacional. I asked him if he would be interested in being interviewed and at first he wasn't sure, but before he left he told me to meet him on Wednesday night at a neighborhood club where he plays cards and then goes upstairs for their milonga.

I took the colectivo but wasn't sure exactly where to get off. I was fortunate to ask the right fellow, because he was getting off there also and nice enough to help me find the street.

When I arrived Senor Segarra was playing cards with three other gentlemen. We went into another room and talked for about an hour. He told me that he began dancing around 1937 and had made a living as a bus driver. I have always been impressed with the skillful way that the colectivo divers navigate the crowded Buenos Aires streets. Back when Roberto was driving it was even more difficult because he had to take the money from each passenger. Roberto has a twinkle in his eye and is one of the few living dancers that experienced firsthand the glorious years of the great tango era. Afterwards we went upstairs and Roberto arranged with the promoters for me to set up my camera on one side of the milonga.

At one point a fellow from the USA that I'd never seen before came up to me and told me that this was a traditional milonga and that I should have asked the promoters permission before shooting any video. I asked him if he knew Roberto Segarra and he said no. I told him that Senor Segarra had arranged with some people (the promoters assistant and the DJ) for me to be there and they had said it was all right. He told me that the promoter had sent him over to ask me why I hadn't asked her for permission to shoot a video. So I went over and met the promoter, Martha Fama,   http://www.tangoandchaos.org/chapt_3search/19entrega.htm , and she said that it was all right for me to continue shooting. I was lucky enough to dance with Marta that night and again at the Entre Tango y Tango milonga at Region Leonesa two nights later.

The video above is of Roberto Segarra dancing a Vals with Martha Fama "La serenata de ayer" by the orchestra of Juan D'Arienzo with the voice of Hector Maure at Garrita Rodriguez milonga, 1191 Manuel A. Rodriguez.

  1. I know Roberto from Salon El Pial, etc., but it was nice to see him dancing with Marta Fama and to see where she holds her practica. I showed the video to Alito and he pointed out Marta Espana, who he has known for many years.
