| My 3rd Buenos Aires Tango adventure, Friday April 29, day 81 I had taken a few Tango classes with 2004 Salon style World Champions Osvaldo and Coca Cartery and they agreed to be interviewed before their Friday evening class. My German friend Susanne Muhlhaus was there to interpret for me. Osvaldo and Coca told a very amusing story about how they happened to enter the competition that lead to them winning the World Championship. They were at Sunderland Club on a night of the preliminary rounds for the City Championship, and some people suggested that they enter the contest. Osvaldo said no, he was not interested in dancing in a competition, that he only dances for pleasure. Later someone came up to Coca and asked her if she would like to be in the contest, and she replied that Osvaldo didn't want to. Somehow their names were added to the list of competitors and when their names were called out to dance, Coca was on one side of the room and Osvaldo on the other, talking to his friend the DJ. Osvaldo told the DJ that it was strange that they had called their names and that he hadn't entered the contest and wasn't going to dance. But the crowd started clapping and demanding that they dance, so they did. They eventually qualified for the the Tango Salon World Championship and were declared the winners. |
